I was diagnosed on a routine yearly check at my local GP. The GP surgery called and ask to be seen as soon as possible after getting the blood test results. I was quite shocked but not surprised to hear from the doctor my sugar level was quite high 22 mmol/L. I had to see the diabetic nurse, who was not very helpful but did say I need to change my diet and gave me a booklet about diabetes and need to see the doctor in 1 month time. See my blog for full details

Fatty food trips a genetic switch in the body that can trigger diabetes.

Understanding the biological pathway could lead to a potential cure for the diabetes disease, say scientists. It helps explain why Type 2 diabetes is so often linked to obesity.

In studies of mice and men, researcher found high fat level disrupted two key proteins turn genes on and off. The two key proteins activate a pancreatic enzyme that in healthy people prevents diabetes developing.

When proteins stop working, the enzyme is shut down. This upsets the ability of insulin-secreting beta cells in the pancreas to monitor blood sugar levels. Without this sensing mechanism, blood sugar cannot be regulated properly. Study leader Dr Jamey Marth, from the Stanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in the US.

Its predicted that developing countries will bear the brunt of this epidemic in the 21st century. Currently, more than 70% of people with diabetes live in low- and middle income countries.

• An estimated 285 million people, corresponding to 6.4% of the world’s adult population, will live with diabetes in 2010. The number is expected to grow to 438 million by 2030, corresponding to 7.8% of the adult population.
• While the global prevalence of diabetes is 6.4%, the prevalence varies from 10.2% in the Western Pacific to 3.8% in the African region. However, the African region is expected to experience the highest increase.
• 70% of the current cases of diabetes occur in low- and middle income countries. With an estimated 50.8 million people living with diabetes, India has the world’s largest diabetes population, followed by China with 43.2 million.

The research, presented by American Diabetes Association conference, shows that an extremely low-calorie diet, consisting of diet drinks and non-starchy vegetables, prompts the body to remove the fat clogging the pancreas and preventing it from making insulin.
